Leotta Gilbertson: There is good noise, and noise that disturbs the peace
Re “Noise expert will present at county planning workshop” (Page 1B, Jan. 29): Upon reading the article about the Stanislaus County Planning Department’s scheduled “noise expert” workshop, I was compelled to write. I strongly disagree statements from deputy county council Thomas Boze, who was quoted in a December story (“Fruit Yard expansion prompts neighbors’ worries about noise,” Page 1A, Dec. 9), saying “People may forget they live in a community where they have neighbors and everything around them is creating noise.”
I agree with the letter to The Bee (“Some noise you expect, other noise is unnecessary” Dec. 16, www.modbee.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor). The writer states, “There are two kinds of noise.” I would invite Boze and the county “noise experts” to come sit in my home when my neighbors, who live nearly two blocks away, are having one of their “events.” They can listen to music booming over my television. They can hear the DJ saying, “Let’s hear it for (insert name)” followed by thunderous yelling and whistles.
We are accustomed to the everyday noise of our community and feel somewhat comforted by those sounds because they let us know all is well. No noisy, boisterous parties or amplified music are welcome here.
