Babette Nunes Wagner: Why would Bee print a blurb thanking Jesus for rain?

Re “Thanks for the rain” (Letters, Feb. 4), thanking Jesus for the rain and snow, to what does the writer attribute the past several years of drought? Was that Jesus, too? And why is Jesus punishing the rest of the planet, our country included, with floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, drought and earthquakes? Is Jesus just focusing on California (with the exception of the collapsing bluffs in Pacifica and the mudslides in various other parts of our state)?

I strongly support one’s freedom of religion, but why The Bee would print such a blurb as this strikes me as pandering to a certain segment of the public that attributes all “good” things to their particular belief system without any basis in fact, science or consideration of the worldwide impact of climate change, the current El Nino pattern and its devastating effects elsewhere.

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, but can’t the “opinion” page do a better job at determining what constitutes a fact-based opinion that doesn’t mislead people? No wonder your readership is dwindling!

Babette Nunes Wagner, Modesto

Editor’s note: The Bee encourages letter writers to express their opinions on a wide variety of public subjects and welcomes responses to those letters.
