Tim Fisher: Republicans believe in self-reliance, not wasting gas

The “political cartoon” (Dec. 28), is without merit. Broadbrushing GOPers as gas masters is off the mark. A conservative belief in self reliance over liberal aspirations for dependency has nothing to do with stewardship. John Muir was a Republican most of his life. Teddy Roosevelt is affiliated with the National Parks movement. More currently you can compare the energy use of Al Gore in Nashville, Tenn. vs. that of the hated George Bush in Crawford, Texas. Look around. I have neighbors and even relatives who are card-carrying Democrats and they run their cars for 20-25 minutes every cold morning. Or check the bumperstickers at the drive-thru at the Yogurt Mill. Thriftiness and self reliance include good stewardship. You are perpetuating a myth to meet your world view.

Tim Fisher, Modesto
