David Erb: Agencies alone can’t protect most vulnerable children

Re “Our View: To stop child abuse, we all must do more” (Page 9A, Dec. 22): The tragic situation of child abuse in Monterey County should pull at everyone’s heart. It is so hard to understand how children can be murdered, abused and neglected, yet it is all too common. Sadly, the laws governing family intervention are aimed at determining if the minimal acceptable level of care is being provided, not the optimal level we all should want.

As a person who worked in Child Welfare Services for 34 years, I saw the worst situations imaginable. I can tell you that although the system isn’t perfect, there must be evidence to intervene. Hindsight is always 20/20 and it is so easy to blame the investigative agencies, yet they aren’t able to share confidential information with the general public to better help understand their involvement. These professionals, in my opinion, have the toughest responsibilities imaginable.

All citizens need to have open eyes and ears and report suspected child abuse and neglect. Thousands of cases are referred to Child Protective Services annually, resulting in many children entering foster care for their protection. The goal is that no child should ever suffer from mistreatment. I encourage everyone to do their part for our children.
