Lyzelle Alcantara: It’s not the guns, it’s the people who use them
While the late mass shootings in San Bernardino are appalling and dreadful, I only fear one thing: Not that I am in danger of falling victim to these horrendous crimes, but that people are looking in the wrong direction and blame the wrong people.
As reported, people begin to push reform for gun control. These people need to realize that changing gun laws is not going to change anything. This has been said many times, but it’s still true: Guns do not kill people; people kill people. The way to fix these problems must start in our own communities.
While I stand with the government in its efforts to perform background checks for gun purchases, changes should start at home. People need to be educated on behaviors that lead to mass shootings. Awareness of our environment and the individuals who surround us. Most shooters have a history of psychological problems. This is what needs to be addressed. The care that these individuals receive is obviously not working.
