Joyce Moe: City Schools should do more with special education
Re “Beard students gain skills on Modesto hospital trip” (Page 3A Nov. 30): Kudos to my special education colleagues and to Beard Elementary School! It takes great planning and networking with the community to make these things happen! In Adapted PE, Modesto City Schools used to pay for and provide transportation for me to take students on field trips. We got to go to the old Modesto Bowl, McHenry Bowl and even to Sonoma School to use the indoor pool to teach the children how to swim! These were terrific community-based instructional activities. No longer though. I can’t remember the last time I was on a MCS funded field trip.
Further, special education is not mentioned at all in any of the MCS measurable annual goals under the Local Control Funding Formula for the next three years.
My hope is the administration can revisit the LCAP to include special education. Teacher have great ideas – just ask us Modesto City Schools!
