Richard Van Slyke: Glad to know many Muslims angry about ‘Islamic’ State
Waseem Bawa, I just read your article (“Muslims, stop calling these killers ‘Islamic,’” Page 3B, Nov. 20), and felt compelled to respond. I applaud your message to “your fellow Muslims.” I, as well as many other non-Muslims, have felt the lack of outrage and anger by the worldwide Muslim community has resulted in a negative view of all Muslims.
I have said many times that if the “good and moderate” Muslims are opposed to the radicals such as ISIS and others using the term “Islamic” in their names, why don’t they say it loud and clear (as you have done)? When Broadway makes fun of other religions – in the plays “ Book of Mormon” or “Jesus Christ Superstar” – the Mormons, Christians, Catholics, etc., do not rise up to kill and bomb. I hope the supreme Muslim leader, such as the Pope, would stand up and denounce ISIS as not representing the Islamic religion. If this were to occur, it would go a long way to help the overall acceptance of the Muslim population worldwide. Thank you for writing this article. I hope it starts a movement.
Richard Van Slyke, Ripon
Editor’s note: There is no consensus global leader of Islam.
