Bruce R. Frohman: Jackman right, Measure I didn’t get fair election

Re “Ballot was fouled up on Measure I” (Letters, Nov. 17): When I read the voter information pamphlet, I was surprised how little information there was about Measure I, the urban limit line proposal.

Given how close the election result, less than a 1 percent margin, one must conclude that the lack of information affected the outcome. Lacking full disclosure, the voter could not reasonably be expected to make an informed choice. One cannot rely on campaign statements to decide; campaigns typically are misleading or inaccurate.

With complete disclosure, Measure I could have lost by an even larger margin or it could have passed. We will never know unless the measure is put on the ballot again with full documentation. Former City Councilman Denny Jackman’s statement in his letter to The Bee seems reasonable.

Regardless of how anyone feels about the merits of urban limit lines, honest elections should receive the highest priority. This past election was not properly conducted. Had Measure I passed, its opponents could have validly raised the same concerns.
