Karen Mosser: Tell the supervisors we should be a ‘no-kill’ county

This coming February, Austin Texas will celebrate its five-year anniversary of being American’s largest “no-kill” city, saving more than 90 percent of it homeless animals. I am determined to make Stanislaus County a no-kill shelter and Trap!Neuter/Return is the No.1 program for a creating a no-kill shelter.

On June 2013, TNR was implement here. Cats that entered our shelter were given health check-ups, neutered and given rabies shots then went out the front door alive instead of out the back door in a garbage bags. TNR was the turning point for our shelter and there is no turning back. Our TNR program, which I volunteered for at its conception, has been saving lives.

We did so well we were recognized by “Alley Cats Allies” with their $5,000 grant and we got a Pet-Smart $100,000 grant, but the cities are holding up this Spay and Neuter grant because of legal matters. I am frustrated with our Board of Supervisors and city councils. Their knowledge of modern animal control methods is nonexistent. The supervisors and cities need to hear loud and Clear from residents that we want to be a no-kill county.
