Mark Haskett: Perhaps one path, but many road maps to God

In regards to the letter “Bible is clear on the path to God” (Nov. 11), in which the writer states the Bible – or, in this case, the New Testament – “is clear on the path to God”: Truly, it is, as is the Torah, the Qur’an, the Granth Sahib and other sacred texts for those who draw inspiration and guidance from them. In none of these texts are people “making up their own gods.” We, like our ancestors, are simply doing our best to understand the “I am that I am” at the foundations of this amazing universe we live in, while extrapolating the rules of conduct which follow from that limited understanding.

It is our conduct, not what any of us merely claims to believe, that provides the best demonstration of whether our path is pointed in the right direction.

I invite the writer and others to experience the wonderful diversity of local faith communities who share this universal spiritual journey by attending the Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration at Modesto Centre Plaza, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m., as a demonstration of our thankfulness in this Season of Light. We’ll be collecting canned goods and contributions to benefit Inter-Faith Ministries.

Mark Haskett, President, Stanislaus County Interfaith Council
