William Cody Wilson: Don’t abandon high educational standards, Modesto
Re “MCS trustees to discuss budget” (Page 3A, Nov. 9): I am severely disappointed in how the Central Valley is considering lowering math requirements, especially considering how I was put through the public school system in Modesto not too long ago. The article about Modesto City Schools budgeting plans sparked my interest. Since moving to the Bay Area, I can see a considerable difference in the importance stressed on education and its direct connection with prosperity and success for not only the students but their families. Education is the common denominator in improving the quality of life.
I understand that budgeting, especially in areas severely hit by the recession, can be difficult. But if the people are not educated and held to a higher standard, then I believe money will continue to drain out of the valley and into areas with more motivated people.
Modesto can not expect to magically improve its financial situation unless it invests in its future; that future is the children. It is fairly easy to see what must be done; after all, it is only the future of all families at stake.
