Steven Green: Measure G failed due to political arrogance
The reason Modesto’s Measure G did not pass is simple, and it seems to be ignored by those who wrote it and who refuse to acknowledge that they comprehend that simple and well-communicated reason. They won’t write a public safety measure in the way that people can see that it will be used exactly as the title of the measure promises. Words like “primarily” and others that are vague can be used to muddy up the simple reason for the ballot measure.
People want the money to be used only for the police and fire departments. When they try to explain how the money will be used by using vague words, it can give license to use the money in a different way. The people can’t trust those who refuse to be transparent and refuse to comply to a simple demand of honesty. Then they blame the people for not cooperating with their dishonesty. Political arrogance.
