Jonathan Olesen: People have to care before they’ll vote

Re “Our View: Want more voters? Get rid of off-year elections” (Page 1D, Nov. 1): Your wrote, “But when only one ‘subset’ votes, is it really a democracy?” Really? Is that truly the product of the editorial board putting their heads together? Those who choose to vote, vote; those that choose otherwise, do not vote. That’s exactly what I would expect in a democracy. Also, getting rid of off-year elections does not really increase the number of voters. Perhaps the turnout for the election will be higher percentage wise, but the off-season old, rich, white people seem to be present at both election years – so where does this added turnout come from? Seems the problem is getting people registered to vote to at least pretend like they care.
