Angeline Michelsen: There is guarantee of freedom ‘from’ religion
Re “Tracy violated student’s rights” (Letters, Nov. 19) It was interesting that the letter writer defending the Tracy student’s refusal to recite all of the Pledge of Allegiance obviously did some research regarding the historical changes to the pledge, but he failed to research the First Amendment to the Constitution. He wrote “As citizens we are granted freedom from religion.” In reality, The Constitution says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” I fall to see any “freedom from religion” in that statement.
Perhaps we all could benefit from studying our Constitution.
Angeline Michelsen, Turlock
