John D. Bruce: Stand with Mexican people in their fight for justice

Mexico is in a crisis of justice after 43 of its student teachers vanished in September at the hands of Guerreros Unidos, a drug cartel. The problem has only escalated, so much that journalists are saying this is the most politically tumultuous time in Mexico since the Mexican Revolution. Protesters are demanding the resignation of President Enrique Peña Nieto and the end of cartel mobster politics.

Who can help these bold people who demand justice? Us.

Our neighbors are in crisis and we are reading about Ebola and ISIS, which are an ocean away. By educating ourselves about the missing Mexican student teachers and Mexico’s struggle for justice, we may understand our neighbors’ fight. By understanding the fight, we might begin to see that we are at the root of the problem here in the USA. We continue to buy and consume Mexican drugs, giving more power to the cartels that have hijacked Mexican law enforcement and the good law that it strives to uphold.

Our neighbors are in crisis; let’s give them our support and solidarity.

John D. Bruce, Modesto
