David J. Herbertson: Hit-and-run driver must have had dementia

Re “Man held on hit-and-run after sitter, kids struck” (Page A1, Nov. 13): Jose Valdivia obviously had dementia and should not be driving. He’s at the right age. I’m sure he didn’t get up that morning and decide to run over those kids. He probably doesn’t remember what he had for breakfast. I spent 36 years driving a patrol car with the California Highway Patrol and the last 10 years as a supervising sergeant. I have dementia.

David J. Herbertson, California Highway Patrol, retired, Sonora
