Corrina Harris: Pets need love to learn not to be aggressive

Having subscribed to The Modesto Bee for more than 14 years, I’ve read many different sides of many different arguments and I’ve got to say that one of the most ridiculous ones I’ve seen is the one regarding pit bulls.

People fail to look at the fact that these are dogs and are animals. As is true of cats, all animals hunt to kill. Tame or not, that is just their nature.

An awful lot of the stories or complaints I’ve seen in the paper suggest that pit bulls were bred to fight, yet I don’t know what evidence has ever been shown to prove that. Therefore it is something that I really don’t believe. I’ve come across many breeds of dogs and I can’t think of one that does not become aggressive toward someone who it considers a threat. I feel that people should be responsible for their pet’s actions, just as we have to be responsible for the actions of our children. If we have a difficult time with them, then we must look for the resources that can help us learn how to change their behavior.

As with kids, pets need nurturing, attention and love to grow up to become healthy and well-behaved.
