Lynne Olivieri: The Bee could do more to help animals

Re “Be Kind To Animals and Each Other” (Letters, Nov. 17): The letter writer urged people to donate not only to organizations helping people this holiday season, but also to groups helping those among us with four legs. I couldn’t agree more! Bravo!

When I lived in the Bay Area, the San Jose Mercury-News had a holiday Wish Book similar to The Bee’s Book of Dreams. Every other year, an animal charity in need of assistance for its many companion animals was included in the donation options. As a true animal rescuer and shelter volunteer, I looked forward to donating to this cause.

Three or four years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor at The Modesto Bee suggesting that such an option be added to its holiday Book of Dreams. The Bee didn’t even see fit to print my letter. Instead, my letter was forwarded to the editor then associated with The Bee’s holiday book. She wrote back to me, telling me that it was too late to add one of our area’s many animal charities to that year’s book, but that it would be considered for future editions.

I’m still waiting! So people, please – open your hearts and wallets for our area’s many pets who waiting for a new home or an initial adoption. They ask only that we feed, shelter and love them. They give us so much in return!
