Frank Denny: Want to clear court backlog? Get trials started earlier

Re “Wheels of Stanislaus County legal system turn slowly” (Page 1A, Sept. 13): I was privileged to serve on a Jury in Modesto last month. I am not surprised to find the legal system does indeed turn slowly. The trial I was a juror on was a murder trial. The incident happened in December, 2012. I know this is a simplistic opinion of how to improve the system, but why does the court start each day at 10:30? Could it start at 9:30 or 10 a.m.? Why does the court break for an hour or 90 minutes for lunch. Who needs 90 minutes for lunch? The court is in session for less than four hours a day. I understand the need for a break, the attention span of the jury is short. But I can see some improvement in the management of the court’s time.
