Bob Loux: Custodian carried a student safety
Tuesday at Keyes Elementary School there was a lock-down. The students were out at lunch recess. The teachers called students in as soon as they could, pulling any student they saw into their room.
One student with diabetes was supposed to go to the nurse at lunch to get insulin, but never made it. He was safe in a teacher’s room. After about 45 minutes, he went into diabetic shock from needing his insulin. The teacher could not leave to get it, she was watching a class full of students. Somehow the information made it to the custodian, and so Homer (everyone knows him as Homer), one of the custodians, runs to the room, grabs the boy, picks him up and carries him to the nurse’s office to get his insulin.
The boy was fine, the lock-down was rescinded 30 minutes later, and Homer went back to work. Homer might not be able to win three World Series games, but he is the definition of a hero. Keyes Union School District should be proud they have Homer working for them, and the parents of the students there should rest just a little easier.
