Dean Jepson: Who really deserves pro-life label?
Re “Being pro-life means supporting all who live” (modbee.com, Nov. 4): Letter passionately stated that the GOP is more sympathetic to pro-life than the Democrats. Really?
Safety devices on vehicles; warning labels on tobacco products and alcohol; air quality indexes: background checks on firearm buyers; affordable healthcare; unemployment help and food stamps; Social Security and Medicare; unions fighting for safe working conditions and worker benefits, as well as educational opportunities are areas that save thousands of lives a year, and are championed by Democrats.
Is it pro-life to cut funding to the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health, hurting research and development? Is it pro-life to say negotiations and sanctions with a foreign enemy is weak, and U.S. servicemen should be placed in harm’s way? Is it pro-life to encourage and subsidize the rape and total destruction of our planet by fossil fuel corporations? After all, corporations are people. They can pursue happiness (prosperity), even at the expense of the safety of millions. However, if a female wishes to pursue her liberty and/or happiness, against the judgment of the Christian right, it’s an abomination?
Though the writer listed several beneficial organizations, he was spot on in stating that there is “so much more to pro-life, than being against abortions.”
