Chris Caskey: Editorial on pit bulls was insulting

Re “Pit bulls can be deadly; hold owners accountable” (Opinions, Nov. 2): I was frankly insulted by the editorial calling for stronger laws about pit bulls, written in response to the horrific mauling by a pack of vicious dogs.

I understand wanting action – some action, any action. But the derisive tone it took toward people who will disagree is unnecessary. The author of the piece ask for suggestions beyond “loving away the ferocity” of these dogs before they’ll listen.

Fine. Here is just one suggestion for you before continuing this conversation. Use more reputable sources of information to back up your stance than dogbites.org, a fanatical website that exploits victims to pursue a vendetta and eradicate the breed entirely, or a dog-bite lawyer. Why didn’t you cite the ASPCA, Humane Society or the American Veterinary Association? Maybe because all three are opposed to breed-specific legislation that’s both misguided and ineffective?

Steps can be taken to prevent the tragedy that took place in south Modesto. Most reasonable pit bull advocates want to have this conversation. They want the same thing, even including new laws if need be. But until you are willing to listen, and consider what they have to say without alienating them, they’re not listening.
