Mike Gain: Both grace and deeds essential for salvation

Re “Deeds, luck don’t gain God’s grace” (Letters, Sept. 11): This letter reflects one of the greatest misunderstandings of the Bible. It is absolutely true that only Jesus can save us. It is absolutely true that we are all sinners and that our works cannot save us. But those concepts cannot stand independent of the rest of the Bible. It is also absolutely true that we must obey the commandments if we hope to be saved. On one hand, my obedience (my “works”) cannot save me. On the other hand, Jesus will not extend His grace to me if I am disobedient. Grace is essential, but works also play a vital role. Both grace and works are required for salvation.
