Stan Grant: Measure B puts a hand in my wallet
There is no doubt that many roads in Turlock are in sad shape. The question of additional taxes to fix them, however, is another matter.
Measure B would be an unreasonable tax burden for taxpayers. For my wife and I, at least $2 of every $3 we earn goes to the government in one form or another. Even our daughter, fresh out of college and earning only $11,000 so far, carries an income tax burden of 10 percent – and this does not include other taxes, licenses and government fees she incurs.
If you, the readers of this letter, have not done so, you will find adding up all of your licenses, fees and taxes (income, sales, utility, gas, etc.) and the like an enlightening exercise. Afterward, you will likely wonder about the return on that investment.
After public safety, public infrastructure is arguably next biggest priority for we the people. And yet, after receiving a very large portion of our income, our government can’t get the job done without asking for more. Evidently, they are not competent. On this Election Day, for no on Measure B, which puts another hand in our wallets.
