Steve Lovejoy: What a thrill to see Yankees, Giants
Not everyone counted at ’62 game
My best friend, Byron Hopkins and I attended the Giants and Yankees workout at Del Webb Field during the 1962 World Series (Sunday, Oct. 26).
There may an answer concerning the discrepancy in the number of people in attendance. The 3,100 total might be accurate, but I wonder if all of us who were lining the outfield foul lines were counted? That might account for the estimate of 5,000. Just behind first and third bases, at the beginning of the outfield grass, a rope line was strung outside the foul lines. Soon the rope “gave way” to our pressure on it. Byron and I were on the first-base side and were on the playing field about 10 feet inside the first base line. Willie McCovey came up to bat and hit a solid line drive 10 feet off of the first-base foul line – coming right at me. The ball hit the grass just in front of my position. It rolled right up to my feet as I bent down to retrieve my prize. What a thrill!
Byron and I were on the playing field the same time as the Giants and Yankees! Go Giants.
