Paula O’Connor: Fill your ticket quota with red-light runners at Briggsmore
Re “Accidents waiting to happen” (Opinions, Aug. 29): I read with interest Dick Hagerty’s column. Thank you for bringing up the Briggsmore Overpass red-light runners. Yesterday I watched as a semi-truck/trailer followed by a dump truck and a second semi go through one red light onto the freeway. It is becoming the norm for semi-trucks to run red lights on the Briggsmore Overpass, along with the usual three or four cars.
I think the Modesto Police Department should set up a sting for red-light running and ask the CHP to join them. This is how I see it working. A MPD officer on a motorcycle sits on the overpass and radios down to the CHP officer waiting on the side of the freeway whenever a car or truck runs a red light and gets onto the freeway. The CHP then pulls the driver over and tickets them. You only need one MPD but more CHP officers since they will be very busy writing tickets. Something needs to be done about this serious problem; it is getting worse.
