Michael Ray Souza: Cheerleading an expensive school activity

It’s time to take a stand; enough is enough!

My daughter is a cheerleader at a Modesto high school. After making it onto the team, we were told we had to pay $450 for the main uniform with bag. Now we have to pay $150 for practice gear. From month to month it seems like they want to have particular colors for hair ribbons and ponpoms. Even with fund-raising, you think kids can do it alone? No, parents must help them. It’s getting ridiculous how much money it costs to support the school team.

We have bills to pay and money doesn’t grow on trees. If parents can’t afford it, the kids can’t participate – which can lead them to getting into trouble. What happens to the state lottery money the schools are supposed to receive? It’s got to be millions a year that we were told was going toward schools. What about parents who work? Do you think it’s easy? Put this on a ballot to make this stop once and for all.
