Greg Masztal: Toss over the Constitution with the anchor babies
Regarding the Republican primaries, here’s the thing that is really bothering me about this “anchor babies” nonsense: The people who demand a strict interpretation of the Constitution when it comes to the 2nd Amendment seem to lose that concept by the time they get to the 14th Amendment, which makes a U.S. citizen of anyone born in this country. The people who repeat this nonsense are really advocating changing the Constitution, and they don’t even realize it.
If we’re a nation based on Christian values, then it’s time to find a pathway to citizenship for all of these undocumented, hard working Americans – not scapegoat them.
Of course, when you’re in a circus that’s attracting a crowd of bigots and racists, you don’t worry about factual details. It’s terrifying to watch a party built by men like Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt devolve into ignorance.
