Ida Winfree: Bee shouldn’t take photo of sleeping people

My name is Ida and I am 11 years old. I read the newspaper in the morning at breakfast before school. I’m writing about a picture of a sleeping homeless man that you printed in the paper (“Déjà vu for city and the homeless,” Page B1, Aug. 20) accompanying an article written by Kevin Valine. It bothers me a ton to think that maybe the homeless man didn’t consent to having this picture published. The worst part is that you took a picture when he was sleeping, which is private even if you are on the sidewalk. How would you feel if you were homeless and a newspaper person took your picture for the entire county to see?

Ida Winfree, Turlock

Editor’s note: The Bee appreciates all its readers. To report the news we often need to take photos in public places; when people are doing things in public, consent is not required to take a photo.
