Joe Sallaberry: Metal thieves almost killed this farmer

Re “Attorney among 9 arrests in homicide” (Page A1, Aug. 15): To Tony Kauffman, the scrapper father: You are proud that your son had a good heart and didn’t deserve what he got. I am a farmer and one night, about 2 a.m., I was irrigating and I turned on my 30-horsepower pump. The motor flew 4 to 5 feet in the air because a metal thief had taken the bolts out but couldn’t steal the motor because it was too heavy. It almost killed me. I would say to you, your son is fine where he is.
