Help available for visually impaired in Modesto
A Stockton Record article reprinted by the Bee, "Gadgets aid the visually impaired" (Oct. 29), contained inaccurate information that might hinder a person with blindness or vision impairment within Stanislaus County from receiving much needed services locally. The article stated that the Community Center for the Blind, in Stockton, is "the only place of its kind in the northern San Joaquin Valley." That simply is not true.
Visually Impaired Persons Support, located at 618 14th St. in Modesto, provides a wide array of visual rehabilitation and support services, including: computer instruction with assistive technology, independent living skills training and Braille instruction. We host a support group every other Monday and a new "Care-Givers of the Blind" support group once a month.
While we appreciate the work of our sister agency in Stockton, it is imperative that readers know that these vital services are available in Modesto. The VIPS staff, 100 percent of whom are visually impaired, would be delighted to demonstrate devices that enhance the lives of individuals who are visually impaired. Please call (209) 522-8477 to arrange a tour or for further information.
