Honoring Veterans Day

‘Reverse’ parade and ceremony set for Veterans Day in Modesto,” (modbee.com, Nov. 1, 2024)

Every year on November 11, we pause to honor the courage, dedication and sacrifices of those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans Day is an opportunity to show appreciation to those who have protected our freedoms.

In California, a state home to some of the country’s largest veteran communities and several major military bases, the tradition of service remains deeply rooted. We should continue to educate younger generations about the importance of sacrifice, commitment and service leading up to the holiday. Veterans Day isn’t just about memorials and parades, but a day to show support to all veterans.

As Veterans Day approaches, take a moment to thank a veteran or find ways to support veterans in your community.

Basic needs

SNAP benefits partially funded amid shutdown uncertainty,” (modbee.com, Nov. 4)

Last week, Louisiana Republican Rep. Clay Higgins defended the $186 billion dollar reduction for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). He posted on X: “Any American who has been receiving $4200 dollars per year of free groceries and does NOT have at least 1 month of groceries stocked should never again receive SNAP, because wow, stop smoking crack.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 42 million people rely on SNAP assistance. The average household expense for food for a family of four is approximately $996 to $1,600 per month. SNAP’s average amount for a family of four per month, is approximately $715. They receive this money via an Electronic Benefits Transfer Card, and there are limitations on what they can buy.

The families, children, veterans and elderly individuals who depend on SNAP need it to survive.
