Wayne Kirkbride: God gave us capacity to learn; don’t waste it

Re “Solar power didn't save dinosaurs” (Letters, Aug. 13): I must reply to the letter in which the writer rails against Gov. Jerry Brown, and other “untaught Christians” regarding God’s way and, in her opinion, the fallacy of global warming. She takes Bible passages from which she derives that “God’s word and global warming cannot both be right. "

If the writer believes in God, then she believes the Creator must have endowed mankind with a brain capable of learning and progressing through time. One of the results of that progression was the study of the natural world, its history and science as part of our education over the centuries. The writer says her mind is made up, so no argument, no matter how logical or uniformly accepted in the academic and scientific world, will ever change it. To me, the most illogical conclusion is that someone, if one believes in God, would not accept science and education as God-given. It then follows that if we don’t handicap our minds, we would want to study and investigate science and accept proven and historical evidence that mankind, far removed from the days of dinosaurs, is contributing to our own calamity.
