A.E. Menshew: It’s not just airlines gouging people with extra fees

Re “Airlines nickel and dime us for millions” (Opinions, Aug. 13): Your editorial reminded me of a situation I recently experienced with a hotel in Las Vegas.

We are attending a reunion in Las Vegas next month and will be staying at the host hotel. We phoned to make reservations and thought the room charge was reasonable. That is until they started adding on the extras. There is a charge of $20 per day for a "facilities" charge. That permits us to use the swimming pool and exercise room. We are charged that amount regardless of the fact that we do not intend to use either facility. The "extra" that really surprised me was a one time charge of $30 to guarantee that our room would be a "no smoking" room. If we did not pay the $30, they would not guarantee it.

I haven't checked to see if there is a parking charge, whether or not they charge to ride the elevators and a drought amelioration charge. It wouldn't surprise me.

A. E. Menshew, Turlock
