Michael Abbott: Homelessness won’t be solved by police action

Breaking News! Some people here don’t have homes. They’re bad for business, so the MPD has driven them from downtown. You think they just disappear? Nope. Did they decide to get homes? Nope. Since having a sleeping bag is a crime, the homeless go where the police aren’t – the neighborhoods. The Virginia Corridor. The College district. Not La Loma, no no. Those homes cost too much. What does this town think is the logical conclusion? The homeless will find the city limits and camp outside them?

Homelessness is a symptom, not a disease. The disease is to let the MPD write our laws and the disappearance of the middle class. The disease is a hard heart.
