Edward J. Staley: If Modesto can’t spend on ‘road diet’ it doesn’t need more money

Re “Council hears concerns from La Loma residents” (Page A1, Aug. 7): The Bee quoted Mayor Garrad Marsh complaining about not having enough money for the Modesto police department to provide certain services. He said that is why we need the additional half-cent tax increase. He did not let the opportunity pass to lobby for his tax increase in a news article.

At the same time, his administration has signed a contract to put College Avenue on a “road diet,” costing taxpayers $1.5 million to convert a local street into a turn lane in the middle rather than two lanes each way. And don’t tell me that is a different budget! Where are his priorities? Look in your pocket.
