Jose Medeiros: Does anyone really believe homeless have it easy?

Re “Helping homeless denies incentive” (Letters, Aug. 2): In response to the letter to the editor seeking to end services to the homeless, who receive only $194 in food stamps a month and a free bed at night at a Christian-run shelter, I ask: Have you ever been homeless?

The key to ending homelessness is a good-paying job. I would much rather make $85,000 a year working in high-tech Information Technology, but I can no longer deal with the stress of doing the job of three people. Due to downsizing and due to our politicians and corporate leaders having outsourced our good-paying jobs to other countries where people are paid lower wages, these jobs aren’t available. Social Security disability has denied me three times even after a heart attack and a diabetic stroke.

Let’s see you try being homeless for at least one month in Modesto and see if you still feel the same the way you do now about us homeless.

“Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.” Ezekiel, 16:49.

Jose F. Medeiros, Modesto (former commissioner, Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board, Santa Clara County)
