Renee Pushies: Want more water, farmers? Then quit watering your lawns
On my drive through Wood Colony to work today, I couldn’t help but notice how lovely green the drive was. Not just green almond trees and corn, but the lush green lawns. The farmhouse in particular that got my ire up had that beautiful, emerald-green lawn. Sunlight shimmered off the water left from the sprinklers and hit a sign that stated in all its hypocrisy, “Pray for rain.”
During this severe drought, I would have thought our farmers would have been especially careful in conserving water, seeing as water is the one thing they need most in order to produce a successful crop. Despite that, the great majority of the large farm houses in Wood Colony have huge, gorgeous lawns.
I am extremely disappointed in the serious lack of care or concern in conserving our most precious resource. Farmers put up their signs all along Interstate 5, blaming Congress for our lack of water, but they won’t even let their lawns die.
They say that God helps those who helps themselves. If our farmers are praying for rain, then they better also help themselves if they want God to give them a hand.
