Margie Brogdon: Christianity can be as cruel as Islam
Re “Sharia law vs. Christian teaching” (Letters, Aug. 2): A writer wrote to ask when was the last time someone heard about Christians killing anyone. Christians are killing Muslims in the Middle East and Africa, just as Muslims are killing Christians. Both have been killing each other for about 600 years.
Christian children in Africa have been accused of witchcraft by pastors and had acid poured on them.
The writer was correct that Christianity was a religion of love, but many have gone back to the Old Testament laws, which, like shariah law, advocate stoning and capital punishment for every infraction – which is why many people see no difference between them. I’ve noticed that when I show examples of this to Christians, who say their religion doesn’t do that, they refuse to look at the news stories and claim the stories must be false. The sad thing is both Islam and Christianity claim to be about love and have passages that support that, and yet they both have passages that support harming those who break the laws or who are unbelievers.
Christians might not behead, but acid baths are pretty bad, too. Neither should be running the government. Even the Bible said not to go back to the laws.
