Merced prepares for annual Field of Honor, a tribute to veterans, active-duty military | Opinion
Field of Honor
“Field of Honor pays tribute to Merced veterans, spotlights military, first responders,” (mercedsunstar.com, Nov. 8, 2021)
As we gather for the 2024 Merced Field of Honor, I am filled with immense gratitude for the support and dedication our community has shown in making this event a heartfelt tribute to our veterans, active-duty military and first responders. The Field of Honor is not just an event, it is a symbol of the strength, unity and compassion that make Merced such a special place to call home.
This year, over 2,000 flags have been placed on the field by our community, honoring the sacrifices made by those who serve to keep us safe. Every flag is sponsored by someone in our community, and many are flown year after year as a testament to the deep connections we share. These flags tell powerful stories of courage, dedication and love for our country.
The City and County of Merced have a rich history of honoring our veterans, understanding the importance of service and the need to recognize those who protect our freedoms. Visit this year’s Field of Honor between Nov. 9-16. Whether you attend the ceremonies or take a quiet moment for reflection, your presence helps honor the heroes among us.

Animal abandonment
“Stanislaus animal shelter running out of space. How to help,” (modbee.com, March 22)
A few months ago, a litter of eight young border collies were dumped in the industrial area of Modesto, just off California State Route 132. They were wandering aimlessly before they were caught. Sadly, they had gone without food for so long that some could barely walk.
How could anyone do this? Animal abandonment has become a common problem, but it remains unacceptable.
Our dogs view us as their loyal companions and love us unconditionally. Abandoning them is unimaginable cruelty that causes them tremendous suffering. A domesticated dog lacks survival skills and will suffer greatly on the streets. A visit to the shelter will reveal the physical destruction to their bodies and the emotional devastation dogs experience — trembling, cowering and refusing to eat. It’s truly heart-wrenching.
Fortunately, those eight border collies all found homes (one now lives with me). But this is a serious problem. Our pets deserve much better. We are facing a crisis of strays that can only be resolved if we all take action together by spaying and neutering.

Protecting the Delta Smelt
“Delta Smelt gain habitat in largest tidal restoration,” (sacbee.com, Sept. 23)
The Delta in Contra Costa County is a vital ecosystem, but many species are in danger. The Delta Smelt, once abundant, is now nearly extinct due to habitat loss, pollution and water diversion. Its decline threatens the food web, fishing and water quality.
Peter Moyle, a fish biologist, said: “The Delta smelt is an indicator species. Its decline signals broader environmental issues that need urgent attention.” The California clapper rail, a bird native to our marshes, is also at risk due to wetland drainage.
What can we do? Help out by joining local conservation organizations like the California Native Plant Society; participate in community clean-ups through VolunteerMatch; advocate for sustainable practices by contacting local representatives; and educate others about endangered species.
Let’s work together to protect this legacy of life for future generations.

Dangers of TikTok
“California, New York lead multi-state lawsuit against TikTok, alleging harm to children,” (sacbee.com, Oct. 8)
TikTok is unsafe and actively harming our children. The platform urgently needs to update its guidelines and improve moderation to protect vulnerable minors. By implementing stricter content restrictions, eliminating targeted content that exploits the innocence of minors and implementing a zero tolerance policy for cyberbullying, harassment and inappropriate behavior, TikTok can become a safer space.
The platform would also need to add content filters, screen time limits and ensure that age-appropriate material is available.
