Sean Howard: Enforce rules for using containers on commercial property

For several years now, we’ve seen a proliferation of used ocean-transport containers being re-purposed as low-cost storage facilities. Initially used as temporary or seasonal storage, these eyesores have become permanent structures and are going unchecked and unregulated. Drive behind any “big box” retailer and see how many of these units reside there. It started years ago during the holiday season, but now there are differing numbers in place all year long.

They’re even showing up on public property (libraries and schools), for both government and non-government use.

There are planning and zoning ordinances in place to oversee the placement and anchorage requirements of these structures, but when will they be enforced? I guarantee the zoning enforcement officers would be all over a residential property owner for similar violations, but yet this rampant “thumbing of the nose” by the business community goes unchecked, much like the code abuses of the mobile food service operators in this area.

City and county zoning enforcement, step up!
