John Goodhart: Reaction to video based on false information

Re “Can’t spin away abortion harm” (Letters, July 22) and many similar letters that want to ban abortion. They are being fed false information, and they’re buying it.

The video claiming Planned Parenthood sells fetuses and organs was done by a vehemently anti-abortion group. It’s goal is to eliminate abortion. Do you think they might stretch things a bit to make their point? Planned Parenthood, like other medical institutions, donates fetal organs if the parents wish it. They must have full permission from the parents. If a fetus is mature enough to have organs harvested, the abortion is done either because the life of the mother is in danger or the child will not live on its own after birth.

Sometimes knowing the child’s organs can save another infant’s life makes losing their child a little easier. Unfortunately, anti-abortion groups don’t agree. What if the government forced them to have abortions (China does)? How would they feel then? They would be outraged. Yet, they don’t have a problem with the government preventing others from having one.

Nobody has a right to make your choices for you. If you are against abortion, don’t have one; that’s your choice. Stay out of other people’s decisions.
