Bruce E. Jones: Iran treaty best option for reining in Iran’s weapons
The world owes thanks to President Barack Obama and Secretaries of State John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, plus their support teams. The agreement with Iran regarding its nuclear programs, which involved five other countries and the European Union, is adequate for accomplishing present needs. These are to get inspectors on the ground and to redirect Iran’s bomb making. But there is a bigger goal – to very slowly, and with caution, decrease tension and conflict between the nations.
If Congress is so foolish as to refuse to approve this treaty, America will have to start all over again to establish sanctions. And if that doesn’t work (and it hasn’t), there is air power. That means yet another war and another wave of international counterattacks by extremists.
Within minutes of the agreement, Republicans launched their predictably extreme generalization without reading the document or listening to analysis. The future of peace is once again threatened by warhawks who have been elected to office by a careless electorate.
