Lydia Berton: Don’t draw conclusions based on surnames

I was reading an article about the horrible killing of five people. I continued to read all the comments when I came across this one: “He must have been an illegal because his last name was Martinez.”

How ignorant can a person be? Just to let you know, there are many Americans who have Spanish surnames and will continue to have Spanish last names for many years to come. We are called Mexican-Americans. We are doctors, lawyers and we even fight for our country. This is what that ignorant Donald Trump did: he made more ignorant people show their ignorance. Bad people come in many shapes and colors.
