Jerry Sauls: Capitalize on Modesto’s strengths, not golf and Nuts

Someone has the idea of pushing our golf courses, the Nuts and Center Plaza under the name “Destination Modesto” to help draw more visitors. Who are they kidding?

A minor league baseball club does not have the draw it would take to lower the city’s subsidy to the Visitors and Convention Bureau. Our golf courses are not in tip-top shape after four years of drought, as regular players tell us every year when the city reviews the budget for maintenance.

The MCVB has gotten involved with the Grogan soccer complex, recognizing the park has the possibilities to do exactly what the city is asking – bring people to town for multiple days. The MCVB has taken the month of June and turned it into Graffiti month, a huge time for all of our local businesses as people come to town and stay for the weekend.

Jennifer Mullen and her staff and have always gone above and beyond and are a large part of the reason Modesto continues to be the Classic Car destination. Why take a person whose specialty is “selling” Modesto and put her in a job marketing golf courses?
