Lee DeLano: Let irrigation canals help recharge groundwater

We are experiencing a severe drought, which has focused demand on the existing high-quality groundwater resources we all use.At a regional forum (tonight, 7 p.m. at the Gallo Center) will discuss the overall water situation and what actions that can be taken for its long-term sustainability. I am unable to attend, but I want to suggest one course of action.

Use the existing canal systems to provide water for groundwater recharge. New concrete technology for porous surfaces and/or geotech materials could provide a path for this recharge and allow continued maintenance.

This recharge system could be installed as time and money are available. A variety of configurations could be installed to optimize the most effective path. Both irrigation and storm waters could be used for this recharge method. This recharge method and systems could be designed, installed and funded by cities, counties, state and federal entities.

The city of Modesto has a potential to partner in Modesto Irrigation District to provide for this kind of groundwater recharge. Since electric ratepayers have subsidized the irrigation system for at least the last 50 years it would seem appropriate that there should be incentive for MID to cooperate.
