Arnold Webb: Same-sex marriage proves freedom rings for all

To the squeals of hardened intolerance, the howls of self-righteous moralists, the jeremiads of bigots threatening the judgment of some fumy god, the slippery-slope arguments so juvenile as to defy belief, and the covert rationales of poseur constitutionalists, a reminder: Our nation was founded first and foremost on a living social contract (read the Declaration of Independence, the preamble to the Constitution) and of its fundamental political goal – equality before the law (read the entire Bill of Rights). History shines with America’s continuing quest to end all forms of inequity, to provide the most protected freedoms to the most people, including extending the franchise to all adult citizens, ending slavery, the on-going eradication of racism, securing women’s rights, etc.

Recognizing gay rights and same-sex marriage conscientiously, vitally continues our quest “for a more perfect union” for all citizens regardless of differences, despite the dogmatic beliefs, the close-mindedness of others; they threaten only ignorance and irrationality, only entrenched inertia and poisonous inhumanity. Let freedom ring!

Arnold Webb, Turlock
