Kenneth Hanigan: Stories of dedication and survival make us appreciate America

As a retired senior, one of the favorite parts of my day is to sit outside in the cool morning air with my hot cocoa and the morning newspaper. I stopped cable service when I retired and this is my way of keeping up with the world around me. Today was worth noting when I read the insight section and the heartwarming story about Mathew and Mike, which ended with tears.

How these two heroes support each other connected with me on many levels and brought to mind how love between a man and his dog can be mystical. I read with interest about veterans protecting us, and the many important things that make up our world. I turned the page and read another story about Clementine and Claire, and their struggles in life.

I know America has its problems, but the millions of horrific stories we read and can not imagine for so many people in the world makes me feel fortunate to have been born and raised in America. I had some really tough struggles growing up, but to live in refugee camps and fear for your life each day is beyond comprehension.
