Michelle Durrer: Like Del Bosque, farmers face assault on their rights

Re “A farmer’s straight talk on the drought” (Page D1, June 21): I very much enjoyed the article about Joe Del Bosque in regards to a farmer’s take on the drought. Farming is one of the last family-operated businesses in California, and most families have been landowners for longer than many people have been alive.

It is sad to think that water rights are now in jeopardy, as well as land rights dating back to the early 1900s. This after years of squandering and overuse by growing cities and diversion of water to the sea. Most people who live in cities have never stepped foot on a farm and have no idea how food gets from a field to their local grocery store. We all must make sacrifices in a drought, but is it right or fair to take from others who rightfully own what you want? Don’t bite the hand that feeds your mouth.
