Donald Condon: Applause for Bishops’ support of Pope’s encyclical

Re “Morality of climate change” (Opinions, June 25): This is a welcome message from three Bishops from the Central Valley supporting Pope Francis’ Encyclical, reminding us of the Church’s long history of warning us of the climate change crisis. They call for “urgent action” to care for our “common home.”

They quote the Pope, saying: “Personal decisions have social consequences, and public policies governing use of resources have implications for the welfare of the entire human family. Therefore, all of us must engage in the political process.”

Eight-hundred members of Citizens Climate Lobby have just returned home after lobbying Congress. Their goal is to assess a fee on carbon and return all of those funds to households on an equal basis. This will reduce heat-trapping gasses and stimulate the economy. It will provide a clear market signal for the development of clean energy. This is the kind of action we need. The people need to let their government know that they demand action, as the Bishops remind us is now necessary. Consider joining a Citizens Climate Lobby meeting in Modesto where a new chapter has just been started.
